Majoranmarjoram
Origanum majorana, a mint relative and a close cousin of oregano. Small soft grey green leaves, a sweetish warm smell.
It is the lead spice in Leberwurst, the German liver sausage. Also in fried potatoes, potato soup, Grünkohl and many sausage mixes.
Die Verwechslungthe mix-up
Mexican oregano is not the same thing. It is Lippia graveolens, a different plant from a different family, the verbenas.
It is far stronger and leans citrus. In a German potato soup it takes over the pot. Do not swap it in.
In Mexikoin Mexico
Mejorana is the same plant. Any supermarket and any mercado has it, dried and fresh.
So no substitute is needed. Just be exact about the name: mejorana, not orégano.
Im Topfin the pot
Rub dried marjoram between your fingers before it goes in. That opens the aroma.
A long boil costs it. In soups and stews it belongs in the last few minutes.
